Sea Panther
A Crimson Storm Novel
By Dawn Marie Hamilton
Sea Panther is the first book in the Crimson Storm Novel series by Dawn Marie Hamilton.
Robert MacLachlan is a Scottish nobleman cursed by the Voodoo Priestess Zola. He is now damned for all eternity to walk his life as a vampire shifter. He has spent lifetimes searching for a cure to his malady. Now in the twenty-first century his yacht is down one crew member. His faithful servant and friend Colin MacEwen has placed and ad looking for said crew member. The answer to the ad may be Robert's downfall or his cure.
Kimberly Scot is a wanted woman. A wanted woman being tracked by the wrong man. A hit man to be exact. A shady financial deal coaxed on by her now ex-fiancé has left her jobless, homeless, emotionally and financially ruined. Desperate to escape her impending doom - she decides to answer an ad for a crew member on the yacht the Sea Panther. Kimberly hasn't sailed in years, not since her father death. She swore she would never said again, until now. Desperate to leave behind her life in ruins, she meets with the Sea Panthers captain and practically begs him to take her with him.
Once Robert meets his new crew member, a female, no less. That is the last possible thing he needs right now! He can barely control both his inner vampire and inner beast from the moment he meets Kimberly. And one small taste of her blood convinces him that he has found his mate! But will Kimberly still want to be with him once she knows about the curse and the beasts within him?
I knew within the first few pages of meeting Robert that I was going to fall head over heels in love and that is exactly what I did. From the Scottish accent to his rebel attitude. The loyalty of his friends and crew only leave you wanting more. His sister Raven left a lot to be desired at first but she quickly began to grow on me. The relationship between Robert and Kimberly was romantic and mysterious. Each page left me wanting more. The tale of woven imagery was good to begin with with but throw in time travel and the Port Royal Harbor, Jamaica, 1715 and I was hooked.
After finishing this book I desperately searched for information on a second book and was so please to find that book two will be Raven's book. So look forward to reading that! And I would love to know more about Colin!
Yeah. That's pretty much me right now. I really, really wanted to love Sea Panther. Like really wanted to. It has so many of my favorite things--kitty shifters, vampires, tortured hero, heroine on the run, neat location--most takes part on a ship--and I enjoyed it quite a bit at first but the more and more I got into the story the more it fell apart for me and in the end I just wasn't wowed at all despite a couple things that did work for me.
What did work---The characters who were pleasant. I enjoyed the crew as they joked and teased each other and their captain (the hero). And enjoyed Robert and Kimberly together for the most part in their protector/protectee roles. The setting was pretty neat and unique. I've not read one that was set on the water as the characters sailed. That was different and fun. And the concept of the story over all was great.
But there was just so much that in the end didn't work for me...
1) The villain was so obvious and not all that inspired. They were inept but still managed to be everywhere the hero and heroine landed at just the right time with no explanation of how that was possible.
2) Self loathing--Robert hates the beasts within him. He's been a vampire shifter for like 300 years and still hates himself and what he is. And I couldn't really figure out...why. He's so afraid of the beasts but they save Kimberly again and again and no real negatives were shown. It got old. She accepted his inner beasts would have been nice of him to as well.
3) Time Travel--At one point they decide to cure him they need to go back in time to when he was cursed and prevent it. Okay. That's fine. But then it just wasn't thought out. He comes back to his regular life in the present as a mortal instead of an immortal and everything is still the same. His contacts, his property, his wealth. But really if he never turned immortal--which was prevented--he wouldn't have any of that when he time jumped back to present day. It was just frustrating
4) Editing--There were some editing blips and things that consistency-wise just didn't work and needed to be tightened up or explained better to make work. This included transitions. Some would jump to a later time to gloss over some action which was jarring and had me scratching my head to figure out what happened when it was finally explained later on. It took me out of the story when that happened.
5) It dragged then went too fast?--I had to really force myself to not skim starting at the 70% mark. It just dragged then things went warped speed and wrapped up all "tidy" before I knew what happened.
6) Too much telling but not showing--These two fall in love...and I couldn't figure out why. It happened quick but there wasn't really anything that led up to it. They just all the sudden are in love. And that didn't work for me. I need to see that spark and magic happening.
So really while Sea Panther had so much potential it was just not a hit for me. It wasn't developed enough storyline wise and too often took the easy way out of things without the rich world building or scenes to make them actually happen--ex like the hit men after her magically appearing everywhere they stopped. That needed explanation in my opinion other than they were just that good. If you can just go with the flow and don't care about major details being glossed over to get to the end result it may work for you. It's gotten stellar ratings on and Goodreads so far...other than me. I won't be continuing on with the series.
Wow, this book was full of adventure! I love the fast pace style of Ms Hamilton's book. Unique combination of vampire_shifter makes this book a wonderful reading.
