this is #2 (1996 italy; 2003 english translation) of the inspector montalbano mystery series by andrea camilleri. you'll do yourself a favor to start with #1, "the shape of water" (1994 italy; 2002 english translation), and follow the series by number (at this writing, 16 in english with more to come). camilleri references previous stories frequently and it's a reader's grace note to follow character development and place-setting along with the writer. that said, this is one of the ground-setting novels that established montalbano in the minds and affections of his legions of followers.in it, you'll quickly see that you're in the hands of a gifted writer with both broad interests and a keen liking for minute detail, and that that marriage will produce hours of reading pleasure. montalbano knits what appears to be a run-of-the-mill supermarket heist (and its background of mafiosi activities), a buried cache of arms, and a pair of corpses 50 years in their grotto into a fabric, accompanied by camilleri's careful asides on history, philosophy, linguistics, and sicilian lore -- in disguise as a whodunit. the dog of the title, incidentally, holds the key.

The TerraCotta Dog The Inspector Montalbano Mysteries Book 2 edition by Andrea Camilleri Stephen Sartarelli Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
It's about the mafia and I really liked it? There's a first. Convoluted, humorous, intelligent, multifaceted mystery that's based in Sicily. There are slapstick moments, which is generally what I dislike about a great deal of Italian humor but here it works. The quaint jokes and style of sexuality are also very Italian and somehow a breath of fresh air. Camilleri's protagonist is the professionally confident yet private and publicly awkward Montalbano. Isn't that often how these things work and work it does. Fortunately for me, I just got back from a vacation to many of the stunning and culturally rich places written about, which has nothing to do with why I finally like a story about the mafia but does aid in visualization. This book is simply extremely refreshing and entertaining. You can't not like it.
P.S. His cover art is great.
I have been to Sicily many times and I have discovered a world apart a land that has been dominated over the ages by Arabs, Greeks, Normans, French, Spaniards, etc. Most of the Greek ruins are in better condition than in Greece! The culture mix and the arid terrain has created strong and determined individuals that never give up. I really enjoyed this book, the investigator was very astute while pretending ignorance. For the first time I found myself laughing while reading! The story was very funny and the characters typical ! My friend, who recommended this book, said that "once you read one book you become addicted and have to order all of them!" And I certainly will.
The Terra-Cotta Dog is Camilleri's second outing with Salvo Montalbano. There are two plot lines in this novel and a lot of bodies for Dr. Pasquano's autopsy table. The key mystery is a mysterious cave and two teenaged skeletons. Not quite Romeo and Juliet. The other ongoing story is of Montalbano's dealing with the local mafia. You'll meet an infamous and impressive "made man" in this novel; and in his own quirky way Montalbano has respect for the man. Sort of. I learned about aspects of Italian culture during the World War II era. I also learned about slippery Sicilian concepts around honor; it apparently was "better in the old days." The author is known in Italy for writing anti-Mafia essays. Again, read the notes from the gifted translator, Stephen Sartarelli. The story is involved, but you'll laugh. Salvo's humor starts to shine in this one.
When you finish all the Camilleri novels, you owe it yourself to see the series of movies done for Italian television with Luca Zingaretti. They are all subtitled and the actors are pitch-perfect.
A stumble into Andrea Camilleri (thank you, Omnimystery News) introduced me to a very different type of crime novel from the ones I usually read. It was funny! Amongst the clutter of dead bodies, only two created the least bit of regret in my heart. They were the young lovers arranged ritualistically in a hidden cave, found only because, at the beginning of this tale, a crime boss made a confession. Why would he do this? That's part of the mystery. The setting is a clue Sicily. Isn't that where our American mafia come from?
I had never heard of this author nor had I read any novel set in Sicily. It was pure coincidence that we had an Italian dinner guest this week who helped me appreciate that Camilleri is famous, even beloved, at home, to the extent that he is parodied by a popular comedian. The Montalbano stories have been made into an Italian TV series that is headed for North America. I have since looked him up on Wikipedia, where his photo shows him wearing a plaid cap and pixieish smirk. I learned Camilleri is a multi-tasker. He directs productions for TV and theatre. He also has written other novels, but they have not been as popular as those featuring the clever and literate Investigator Montalbano.
I found the twists and turns of THE TERRA COTTA DOG something like a ride down one of Italy's narrow, winding mountain roads, bringing the odd characters and strands of the story to a satisfactory and finally obvious conclusion. I look forward to more, on my and on the screen.
