The mind is an incredibly complex structure. The horrors this woman went through and her coping mechanism make for a disturbing yet incredibly interesting read. This young therapist had his hands full keeping track of all the alters, their various purposes and personalities. Hats off to both doctor and patient for sticking with the process. It left me wanting a bit more if the aftermath with her mother, husband and children - did they ever get the full story, how did it affect them? Having one of the alters come up with the process to bring all the parts into the whole was amazing.

Where do I️ begin?
This book is deeply touching, and heart wrenching, as well as painful and horrifying to read. Yet I was compelled to continue. After all, I️ was merely reading about the abuse not enduring it as Karen was.
It is so well written. I️ didn’t see any errors or typos. It is a complicated book capturing all the personalities, bringing in the facts, then the emotions, and so many details. It is incredibly well done and brought together in an uncomplicated, understandable way. Your heart just breaks for Karen and for her other personalities who she “developed” to aid her in times of distress when she was unable to cope with the pain and sorrow and EXTREME abuse! This book is almost just beyond words for me. It is hard to review. The book is done so well but it is so painful to see the depth of depravity and evil. It’s hard to have the wickedness detailed before your eyes. We know this evil exists but this book leaves you fully aware-with knowledge you’d really prefer not to have but it is so important that we do know the truth. I️ pray it opens the eyes of everyone who reads this or hears about it to be alert and watchful for children, or any person who may be suffering under some authority figure. May we not be afraid to step up and help these children, these people.
I️ had no idea before reading this that a particular reason for a multiple personality disorder would be for self protection. I️ really had no education on what may cause it other than maybe drug abuse leading to that effect. But this is much deeper.
Dr Baer is in amazing man who sacrificed much of his own life to help Karen become whole again.
It is a painful, yet beautiful story. Terrible abuse was inflicted upon Karen. But, she in the end had a healing, supportive relationship with her psychiatrist, that developed into a friendship. She learned about unconditional love and kindness. She’s learned how to enjoy life without fear.
God bless this precious lady who endured so very much. I’m so grateful she has come through this.

I purchased this book based on a handwriting expert's recommendation. I've been curious about Dissociative Identity Disorder DID, Multiple Personality Disorder, aka Dissociative Personality Disorder and wanted to understand the fragments of personality. After reading Dr. Baer's memoir about "Karen," I came away with myriad impressions and a greater understanding. The number one thing I learned is that our minds will go to incredible lengths to protect us. 2) There are incredibly ordinary-looking monsters among us. I've read some of the reviews in which people felt this work was repetitious. This wasn't a thriller; this was eighteen years of psychoanalysis in which a woman repeatedly wanted to kill herself because of her childhood abuse.

I also learned some things about psychiatrists, mainly that they're human and a lot of what they do is trial and error. Based on what I read I admired Dr. Baer's ability to step back and not incorporate his agenda onto Karen's. I found the different egos each alter exhibited, the different hand writings, and the reason they were "born" educational and enlightening.

I found the integration of the alters into Karen fascinating as I read about this woman becoming whole again. For those reviews that say it was repetitious, I would argue that eighteen years of "rebuilding" such a tragic case as Karen didn't happen overnight. To restore her to be able to function again had to have been painstakingly repetitious.

I couldn't imagine a happy ending for this story for either the psychiatrist or the patient. I'm grateful I had a chance to read and understand more fully what our minds can and cannot handle. I'm also grateful I had a chance to read such a story in this format rather than a psychiatric study or textbook. Switching Time breaks down a complicated subject and makes it more easy to understand for a lay person.
